i worked at B & W companies and they differ from each other
so we know it does not necessarily always have to do with ethnic cultural differences

however, it certainly does produce misunderstanding between different ethnic cultural backgrounds

chinese typically do not go all the way streight to the point but be subtle because we all need face. with B & W you better be streight or your message cannot be effectively conveyed it gets lost in translation after too much sugar coating efforts.

that being said, does not mean you be an ass to your subordinates all the time. a lot of time you do not comments or at least do not start a converstation while you do need to sustain your lead on a conversation. the way i was trained was to "coach" people but listening is more important than talking in communications...never cut people off and never
walk all over people...just make sure the conversation is going into the direction you want, and they get to vent so you understand what is bothering them. if you think you have a solution for a prob, do not volunteer it, let them talk first
then guide them through. you typically encourage people come to you with a prob and a solution for it, until they exhausted their own resource, your solution comes out so that you take less chances of failing on your ideas...but if people come to you with prob and you never have nothing to offer, they won;t come back and you will find yourself left with nothing but a supervision title but no leadership...
