China
Obama: Obama has said China is "neither our enemy nor our friend. They're competitors." He's called for a re-evaluation of the yuan, saying the Chinese are manipulating its value, keeping it artificially low, a policy that hurts American manufacturing. He has criticized China on intellectual property rights, human rights abuses, and the country's actions in Sudan and Iran. Still, he favors military cooperation to keep the region stable. Obama has said he would keep the option of boycotting the Olympics open and make the decision contingent on China's actions in Sudan and Tibet.
McCain: McCain has called for the U.S. to "hedge" against the threat of a rising China by strengthening ties with regional allies like Japan. McCain wrote in the journal Foreign Affairs that China's rise should not be regarded as "quiet" until the country is more transparent about its military capacity. McCain has said he would not attend the Olympic ceremonies unless China changes its policies toward Tibet and Sudan.
