Wind power company gets backing from Goldman Sachs

San Rafael-based Nordic Windpower, a manufacturer of two-bladed utility-scale wind turbines, announced that it has received a "significant investment" from investment bank Goldman Sachs.
"Having a world-class global financial power as our financial partner, it not only gives us financial strength, it shows our customers we're going to be in business for the long haul," Nordic CEO Steve Taber told the Business Times in August.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Nordic Windpwer launched its U.S. operations in June, with plans for a 2008 North American manufacturing rollout. The company has not said where it will make its turbines, or if it has signed any U.S. customers.
In a statement, Taber said that the investment "provides Nordic with the resources to deliver its turbines as early as 2008 and focus on high-growth markets globally."
The investment is not Goldman's first in the wind industry. It purchased Texas-based Zilkha Renewable Energy -- now known as Horizon Wind Energy -- in 2005, and has said it intends to be a "leading U.S. wind energy developer." It sold Horizon to Energias de Portugal, S.A., in July 2007.
Nordic's turbine technology comes out of a 30-year, $75 million investment by the Swedish government. The company's turbines have been in operation in Sweden for 10 years.
GE, Siemens and the Danish company Vestas dominate turbine manufacturing, according to a May report from the U.S. Department of Energy.
