warning: it is all based on my experience around 5 years ago, things may change over time and please do not blame me if some info is no longer valid.
First thing: when land on Paris, buy a map immediately. Map for subways are freely available at any metro stations. Ask then you get it. If one does not ask, do not expect Frenchpeople to help you out.
If everyone understand your English, but always reply in French, do not be pissed off, that's the Parisian way of saying "Not you, but your money is welcome here".
1.all places of interests are within the reach of the Parisian subway system. She can buy tickets in block (10 tickets once) to minimize cost per ticket. One ticket allows one traveler to switch among any metro trains underground. But as soon as he or she goes to the surface of the road, one ticket is over.
2.places one must go:
a. Muse de louvre--the place where one can see all kinds of famous paintings, sculptures and art works (so called object de art). I remember it is free on one day in each month, but not sure about which date. Please google it.
FYI, it has a wonderful collection of Egyptian/persian antiques.
Time needed: Chinese-style touring (half a day--you get all pictures, but understand nothing).
Serious tourist: at least one day.
True lover of de Louvre: one month to see/ understand all artworks.
Free brochure available at the front gate (in English, Chinese, French.....).
Strongly recommended: buy a book beneath Pei's glass pyramid before starting the tour---background knowledge is helpful to serious tourists, those non-pose-shoot-and-ran ones.
Note: all explanations besides Louvre's artworks are in French. Your friend should either become a master of French first (which is usually not possible for people in America) or rent Louvre's audio equipment to get all background info in English or Chinese. FYI, it is not free.
b. Chateau de Versailles
It is located northern of Paris, reachable through inter-city train. Need at least one day.
Access to the front gate is free, but not for the chateau. But it is worthwhile to pay the money to see the splendor--after that, you will understand why those hungry Parisians wanted Louis 16th's head. Do not miss the royal chapel inside it.
Watch the movie "Marie Antoinette" first before visiting that place. It is a good introductory movie to that place.
Time required: at least one day. One needs to walk through the whole garden to understand the beauty of French gardening (actually imported from Tuscany and modified with French glory).
Do not miss the French village: that's the place where Marie lived like a peasant with her beloved kids. That's also the place where she put a green hat on Louis 16th. That gentleman is from Sweden, a former attache to Paris.
c. Department store: Lafayette. No need to explain. Everyone knows that.
d. BTW, if she will leave France(EU) after her visit, ask her to keep all receipts and get assistance from sales assistant on VAT refund. She can get refund at the Charles de Gaul airport before she leaves France.
e. one good chocolate brand: La Maison.
The list of places of interests can be very very long, things like Modern Art museum(Pompadeur Center), 16th Century French Art Museum, Napoleon's tomb, French military academy, Sacred Heart Church, Royal Chapel, Assembly Nationale....
But I do not think that ladies really care about that.
Last advice: get a big check and spend as much as you can (if run out of credit limit, use her husband/BF's card as the "gift card"). Whatever the brand clothes and perfume you buy there will be cheaper and better than in US. Of course, I am assuming you get your VAT refund....
