Title:
Automated, Fast, 3D modeling of indoor and outdoor environments
Abstract:
Modern web-ba<x>sed mapping software has enjoyed an incredibly rapid adoption curve. But another leap is possible. Please join us as Avideh Zakhor, a leading researcher, explains the state-of-the-art in fast, automated, 3D modeling of indoor and outdoor environments. Her system consists of a number of sensors such as laser scanners, cameras and orientation sensors. Unlike existing systems which acquire the data in a stop and go fashion, these new systems collect the data on the fly, while moving, and require no human intervention. This results in significantly shorter data acquisition and model production times. Prof. Zakhor will show examples of 3D models of indoor and outdoor environments, and reset your expectations about the kinds of detailed 3D information that can be made available - at scale.
Bio:
Avideh Zakhor joined the faculty at UC Berkeley in 1988 where she is currently the Qualcomm Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences. Her areas of interest include theories and applications of signal, image and video processing, 3D computer vision, and multimedia networking. She has won best paper awards from a number of organizations, including the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 1997 and 2009, the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 1997 and 1999, the International Conference on Image Processing in 1999, the Packet Video Workshop in 2002, and the IEEE Workshop on Multimodal Sentient Computing in 2007. She holds 6 U.S. patents, and is the co-author of three books with her students.
Prof. Zakhor received her B.S. from CalTech, and her S.M. and Ph.D. from MIT, all in electrical engineering, in 1983, 1985, and 1987 respectively. She was a General Motors scholar from 1982 to 1983, was a Hertz fellow from 1984 to 1988, and received the Presidential Young Investigators award, and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator award in 1992. In 2001, she was elected an IEEE Fellow, and, in 2004, was awarded the Okawa Prize.
She co-founded OPC technology in 1996 (acquired by Mentor Graphics in 1998), Truvideo in 2000, and UrbanScan in 2005 (acquired by Google in 2007).
