Piper Jaffray Senior Analyst Gene Munster lowered his price target and earnings estimates for Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) but maintained an "outperform" rating on the company, believing shares could appreciate in calendar 2006 despite weak fiscal second-quarter guidance.
"Buying shares of Microsoft early will pay off," said Munster. Wall Street, on the other hand, believes it is still too early to own the stock given the potential for a slowdown in sales preceding the launch of Vista and Office 12.
Microsoft reported first-quarter fiscal 2006 earnings of 31 cents per share on revenue of $9.7 billion versus Street estimates of earnings of 30 cents per share on revenue of $9.8 billion. Second-quarter fiscal 2006 guidance calls for earnings per share of 32 cents to 33 cents on revenue of $11.9 billion to $12 billion, versus consensus estimates of 35 cents on $12.3 billion.
Munster lowered his price target on Microsoft to $31 from $33. He decreased fiscal 2006 estimates to earnings of $1.33 per share on revenue of $44.229 billion from earnings of $1.40 per share on revenue of $44.277 billion, based predominantly on a downward revision of Xbox 360 revenue.
