Since I had my T-mobile tri-band phone (Samsung 104S) more than one year ago, I brought it back to China three time. As soon as your land in China, and switch to the Chinese band width. It works just like in US, with better signal strength. I used it to receive calls from US and Taiwan, called back to US, and made calls to Germany, either in major city, or inside a train cross China (2000+ km), every time works. Sometimes the carrier switched from China Mobile to China Netcom depends where you are but always worked. The only trouble is you have to pay $2.99/min. Ouch!
I also tried the second solution by unlock the SIM card. So far I had many instruction in US from T-mobile but never worked in China. Several time I was getting real close to have it work (with different shops in China). If anybody else can post a detail how you complete the task, sure I would like to know. My next trip is less than 1 month away.
