Cat freed after five years trapped in a wall
A kitten that spent the past five years trapped alone in a wall has finally been set free.
The kitten – now a cat – is known as Biso and for years he has lived in a wall in a train station in Cairo, surviving off of the food brought to him by an elderly benefactor known only as Uncle Abdo, The Cairo Post reports.
But after so many long years trapped in the darkness, Biso is now free thanks to the efforts of Uncle Abdo and a team of animal welfare activists.
Uncle Abdo first spotted Biso’s tail hanging below a row of tiles several years ago and began taking care of the hapless animal. It is believed Biso ran into the space in an effort to find shelter in about 2010 but, since then, he has not been able to get back out.
For several years he was fed through a crack in the wall by Uncle Abdo, who owns an optometry shop nearby. Even during the tumultuous events of the Arab Spring, which forced the shop to close, the man returned to the station to feed Biso.
“I do it for God. What is for God does not go away,” he told reporters.
Demolishing the wall would have been against local laws, the paper reported, however, when a group of activists learned of the cat’s entrapment they launched a social media campaign to convince authorities to rescue the doomed animal.
Finally Biso’s supporters filed a report with police and last month an order was given to break open the wall to free him.
When the wall was finally opened workers found “a heinous” smell and large black worms inhabiting the space that had been the only home Biso had ever known.
Unfortunately Biso was terrified by his new found freedom and again ran to find a new hiding place. Uncle Abdo has been searching the train station for him ever since.
